As one of the UK rock scene’s most hotly-hyped bands of right now, Black Peaks are a band you’ve probably at least heard of, and definitely need to hear. Talked up with huge enthusiasm by Jamie Lenman during a recent TMMP interview, behind the praise and acclaim Black Peaks are more than a mere “hype band”. On record and onstage, Black Peaks have Read more…

Max Raptor / Yearbook / Swim Good / Let’s Talk Daggers / Sutek [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 24/2/2015]

max raptor boileroomTuesday was a good day until I got to this show and realised it had started earlier than predicted, and I’d missed not only openers Sutek, but also one of my favourite new bands of math-metal maniacs, Let’s Talk Daggers. Sad face indeed. Still, Swim Good soothed my cravings for complex tunes with a loose but still awesome set. These guys can do no wrong, even when beset by technical issues. They really are that goddamn good. Happy face: restored for the rest of the night.

Yearbook (think a pop-punk Reuben augmented by the occasional bit of fancy guitar work) never fail to Read more…

North Seasons – ‘Never Forget This’ [Review]

north seasonsProg-hardcore mixed with Korn-esque riffage? Sounds pretty damn epic to me! North Seasons are really pulling away from the post-hardcore herd with this track, chucking in Read more…

Mariachi El Bronx / Pounded By The Surf [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 17/2/15]

mariachi el bronxLA hardcore band lives double life as a mariachi group. Sounds like sacrilege – until you bear in mind that hardcore pioneers Black Flag were experimenting with spoken word and jazz fusion as far back as 1984. Does purity belong in punk? More to the point, who the fuck Read more…

Hindsights – ‘Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes’ [Review]

hindsightsIronic as it is, I have a real soft spot for grim and raw post-hardcore. With Cold Walls/Cloudy Eyes, Hindsights have hit said spot super-effectively. Crank up the volume, and you’ll be richly rewarded with Read more…

Palm Reader – ‘By The Ground, We’re Defined’ [Review]

palm reader album promo 2Palm Reader are many things. Angry. Intense. Cathartic. Heavy.

And fucking awesome.

By The Ground, We’re Defined continues to mine similar ground to Palm Reader’s last release, I Watch The Fire Chase My Tongue – but although the Dillinger-esque mathcore style itself is Read more…

Red Seas Fire – ‘Blood Bank’ [Review]

red seas fire resolutionIn an age of unrelenting retromania, music desperately needs to move forward. In the rock and metal underground, we’re lucky to be a part of that movement in supporting bands like Red Seas Fire. Massively syncopated, sensorily hyperstimulating, and modern yet emotive and non-clinical, Blood Bank forms just one quarter of Read more…

Hawk Eyes – ‘Everything Is Fine’ [Review]

hawk eyes everything is fineOpening with Tom Morello-esque volume swells and kicking into a raw and stately Karnivool-style groove, The Trap is one of my favourite scene-setters in some time. I knew Everything Is Fine would be sick, but Read more…

Djevara – ‘VIVA! / PUNK IS NOT A SOUND’ [Review]

djevara vivaSome bands spend their entire careers stuck in the shadows of others. Female-fronted rock bands are constantly compared to Paramore; prog-metal acts are weighed up against Dream Theater and Periphery; and political rock bands get pinned with the “RATM Clone” tag as soon as they hit a proper groove.

Third-group members Djevara have done more than most to Read more…
