London Grammar – ‘Hey Now EP’ [Review]

london grammar hey now epOk. Wow. Attempting to describe just how incredible Hey Now is presents this writer with an uncomfortable reality. Words can only go so far. ‘Beautiful’, ‘lush’, ‘epic’ – all fit and work perfectly, but are still somehow inadequate. Read more…

Princess Slayer feat. ShaoDow – ‘Rave Ninja’ [Review]

PS ft. ShaoDowOne of TMMP’s top unsigned artists.

Getting filthier than ever before.

Teaming up with a seriously sick rap don.

And referencing martial arts masterpiece Ong-Bak, and O-Ren Ishii (a key character from Kill Bill). See the videos below if you’ve never seen two of the greatest movies of all time.

This could only be better if it were being played live, in front of my eyes, with a deep thudding kick drum in my guts and those synths churning through the bodies of a field full of fellow festivalgoers. Read more…

Marco Minnemann – ‘OC DC’ [Review]

marco minnemannIf experiments this wild were performed on people, the individuals responsible would be locked away. Happily, though, Marco Minnemann has chosen to restrict his boundless curiosity and dizzyingly inventive sense of creativity to the world of music – and the result is a glorious piece of genre-splicing audio terrorism that’s warmed my heart and dropped my brain cells into a sea of inspired bliss. The really crazy thing? This is just one track from Marco’s upcoming solo album, EEPS! Read more…

Morning Bound – ‘Morning Bound’ [Review]

morning boundI’m really happy to see that prog-pop is slowly becoming A Thing. Dirty Loops, Eyal Amir, Project RnL, Maxi Curnow, Signals, and many others have a real knack for melding beautiful songwriting with unorthodox arrangements and stellar musicianship to create a fresh and exciting new sound crammed with so much potential for variation that it makes the stuck-solid formulae still relied on for pop chart success seem exhausted and thickly cobwebbed by comparison. Parachute For Gordo – ‘Ten Metres Per Second Per Second’ [Review]

parachute for gordoAs this blog’s name suggests, I love variety. Nothing gets my ears twitching and brain cells firing quite as readily as the discovery of a fresh new band capable of delivering healthy doses of genre-hopping brilliance. Parachute For Gordo are, therefore, a godsend to me. Read more…

Signals – ‘Sleep Talk’ [Review]

signals sleep talkTMMP readers know all too well how much we love Signals. I’ve raved over their Facial Furniture EP (a release that set me off on a fiction-writing spree now slowly giving way to a debut novel), told readers to watch them this year, practically ordered the recorded music industry to get involved with Signals ASAP, and contributed to the Kickstarter campaign that led to the creation of this track and its official video.

I’m not even remotely surprised that this tune and the accompanying visual extravaganza surpassed my expectations. No doubt, behind the scenes Signals must be working themselves to death – but on record and video the overall effect is one of grace, effortlessness, and consummate mastery. Sleep Talk is, quite frankly, a stunning tune that proves catchy songs don’t always have to conform to a rigid, immutable, and done-to-death formula in order to get the job done. Signals wave the math-rock flag with pride while inviting the wider world to wear its colours too – and their approach is clearly paying off. Read more…

Bare Jams – ‘Rigglet EP’ [Review]

bare jams riggletAs I write this, I’m sitting outside in the sun. Birds are sitting on branches in the shade, there are no clouds in sight, and the temperature is just right. This EP is in my ears, and right now it feels like nothing else on Earth could soundtrack these moments better. Read more…

You Had Me At Hello! – ‘Spirals’ [Review]

you had me at helloTen years ago, I would have hated this album. Spirals wouldn’t be alone, either – back then I hated pretty much anything that wasn’t either super-raw or crammed with as many notes as a Steve Vai or Dream Theater album. When My Chemical Romance came along, I pointedly stuck my nose in the air and ignored them…while they became one of the biggest bands in the world.

Today, however, things are different. To my ears now, this album just sounds fun – not to mention full of songs that mix a mature approach to song craft with boundless youthful energy. It’s still not 100% my thing, but I can appreciate it far more deeply than I could when SikTh’s The Trees Are Dead And Dried Out, Wait For Something Wild was the exclusive soundtrack to my life. Kevin Nolan – ‘Fredrick & The Golden Dawn’ [Review]

_Fredrick & The Golden Dawn_ album coverWhen I watched Thomas Truax and Bob Log III turn the Boileroom inside out, I remember trying to think of a third artist who could fit perfectly – seamlessly, even – alongside said masters of sheer weirdness.

As of now, I have found that third artist – and his name is Kevin Nolan. Read more…

Arcane Roots – ‘Over & Over’ [Review]

arcane roots over and overFirst off, let me just say: This tune is fucking immense. It’s anthemic, even joyful, heavy as fuck, and is wrapped up in a unique sound that can be readily identified as belonging to Arcane Roots – regardless of what the “Biffy Clone” critics claim. Now, there’s a certain amount of Biffy in there, yes – after all, music is rarely made in a vacuum, and artists of all stripes have been influenced by others – but Arcane Roots deliver their own special twist on Biffy’s brand of new-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll.
