I honestly can’t believe that this is A R T E L S’ first track and video. This kind of class straight out of the gate is damn rare; the only comparable act to A R T E L S right now are Guildford’s own Following Foxes, whose live show and recorded output show a similar level of single-minded ambition and professionalism. Hurricane is classy, elegant, and brutally percussive – often simultaneously – and a worthy listen for anyone intrigued by the term ‘folktronica’. Read more…
Sublime. Infinitely cool. Near-impossibly effortless. Building fragmented non-sentences made up of adverbs and adjectives can be seen as bad writing, but it’s also an effective method when it comes to describing Trickster. Carefully chosen notes flow through strangely-tuned strings and warm tones to arrive in the ears fully formed and deliciously seductive. I love this track – and if you’re into the likes of Mike Dawes, Andy McKee and company, you definitely will too. Read more…
Parachute For Gordo are nothing if not inventive – and this video serves only to carve that statement in stone and shine a crystal-clear spotlight upon it. Fittingly quirky, unusual, and strangely attractive, Decoy Octopus is a must-watch for anyone willing to push some boundaries and indulge their arty side. Read more…
Some bands have it all. Flawless production, epic songwriting, whip-cracking performances, a wickedly slick video, and a cheeky Back To The Future reference for a title. If you don’t think that’s enough, there’s something wrong with you. Read more…
This is really interesting. A true musical melting pot that barely contains a brew of pop, rock, and punk spiced up with plenty of brilliant musicianship and real songwriting nous, Futures is intense, solid, and gloriously beautiful. Super cool, and an unmistakable sign of greater things still to come. Read more…
I’m not even remotely surprised that this tune and the accompanying visual extravaganza surpassed my expectations. No doubt, behind the scenes Signals must be working themselves to death – but on record and video the overall effect is one of grace, effortlessness, and consummate mastery. Sleep Talk is, quite frankly, a stunning tune that proves catchy songs don’t always have to conform to a rigid, immutable, and done-to-death formula in order to get the job done. Signals wave the math-rock flag with pride while inviting the wider world to wear its colours too – and their approach is clearly paying off. Read more…
Over the past few years, crowdfunding has become one of the music industry’s most talked about topics. Adopted by acts as diverse as art-pop legend Amanda Palmer and Canadian tech-metallers Protest The Hero, crowdfunding has made headlines worldwide and opened many eyes to the power of direct-to-fan business models.
Ben Minal created one of the top Indiegogo campaigns of 2012 before he had even finished university. Beating a target of $7,500 nearly three times over, Ben was able to send his band Dorje (fronted by YouTube guitar star Rob Chapman and completed by guitarist Rabea Massaad and bassist Dave Hollingworth) on a two-week UK tour alongside The Drills, themselves fronted by regular Bon Jovi sideman and session legend Phil X. TMMP sat down with Ben Minal to talk about Dorje, crowdfunding, the future of the music business, his current projects and passions, and how a man ordering a pizza changed the course of four careers.Read more…
When checking out a female-fronted band, it can often be hard to focus on the music. Frankly, in such situations it’s common for everything except the vocalist’s makeup to suck horrifically. After all, it’s a sad (if unsurprising) fact that sex appeal sells – and many acts aren’t above milking said time-honoured marketing ploy until it’s dry, shrivelled, and flaccid.
Thank god, then, that Fine Fine Titans are above that bullshit. Read more…
Having read those words, your brain is most likely already overflowing with thoughts, ideas, and opinions. Free music is, to say the least, a controversial topic that raises all kinds of questions, such as these: Read more…
