ASTPAI – ‘Burden Calls’ [Review]

burdencalls_cover_webFrom the opening building blocks of Single Use to the gritty, harsh tones of Emotion In The WayBurden Calls is a brilliant mix of the familiar and original. Yes, it’s punk – but there are plenty of imaginative touches that set ASTPAI apart from the rest. Whether it be a dose of mathy complexity, a moment of melancholy vibes, or a surge of cliff-jumping explosiveness, ASTPAI aren’t afraid to push the boat out beyond the traditional, often militantly enforced boundaries that separate classic punk from contemporary rock. Chronographs – ‘D.O.T.S’ [Review]

DOTS Artwork FinalChronographs are one of my favourite bands of right now. Their current project – writing, recording, and releasing a song a month for a year – is, in my opinion, more relevant to modern life than the more traditional album release cycles still employed throughout the record business. Each time Chronographs release a track it describes precisely how they feel right now – or have felt very recently. Read more…

Black Peaks – ‘Closer To The Sun’ [Review]

black peaks closer to the sun

UPDATE: TMMP has been reborn! This video has the full story:

Click here to subscribe for free on YouTube!

There are three kinds of bands: Those who sound good on record, those who sound good live, and those who do both. Ideally, every band would fit the third mould – but even if that were the case, Black Peaks would still stand out by a dozen country miles. Read more…

A Guide To Chronographs [Special Feature]

chronographsChronographs are a recent discovery, and they’ve made a real impact in a very short time. I’ve written a lot recently about how I try to offer constructive criticism where possible; but I just can’t think of any way to improve this band. Chronographs are like a firework with a lit fuse. Your best course of action is to stand well back, and watch them go. Read more…

Shrine / I Plead Irony / Throatpunch City / For Astronauts And Satellites [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 3/7/14]

shrineI’m going to skip any introductory stuff and just jump to…

For Astronauts And Satellites

…because fuck me, I have no idea how these guys do what they do. I’ve heard of chiptune before, but since I’m not much of a gamer I always dismissed it as being a bit too geeky for my tastes. Judging by this display, I was dead wrong. Read more…

Yearbook – ‘Old Bones’ [Review]

yearbook old bonesThis EP is a triumph.

Yearbook are masters of syncopation, turning bars of 4/4 inside out and making common time sound as uncommon as it gets. These tracks aren’t so much “songs” as they are guided tours through Yearbook’s collective musical consciousness, unorthodox constructions laced with elements of the familiar and, yes, catchy. As with Yearbook’s live shows, there’s an ever-present middle finger raised in the direction of compromise and comfort zones; if Coheed and Cambria decided to take on the world of math-pop, they would sound as Yearbook do right now. Rose Coloured Records – ‘Doorstep – Volume 1’ [Review]

rose coloured recordsHere at TMMP, grassroots music is a big deal. I’ve never understood why people will happily watch rubbish, stuck-in-a-rut TV talent shows that promote an illusory path to instant fame (and drop almost every winner once the last pennies have been squeezed from their exhaustive promotional activities) when hundreds of far more fascinating stories can be found just down the road, at a local music venue like The Boileroom in Guildford. It’s incredible to think that so many great, even world-class talents can go ignored, despite being within such easy reach year in, year out. Why wait for the next week’s TV-scheduled slot when you could just poke your head out of the front door and experience something first-hand? Read more…

Tall Ships / Northsee / Ornament Tournaments [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 19/6/14]

tall ships boileroomLet’s be honest here – when it comes to the football, England never learns. 1966 was a long time ago – almost half a century ago, actually. Football is the beautiful game…as long as Spain are playing. Or Brazil. Or Italy. Or…well, anyone but us.

The crowd at this gig had the right idea. Although the venue took a while to fill, fill it did – and just in case anyone spent the show glued to their Facebook feeds for the duration of the show, The Boileroom had the England v Uruguay game streaming on one wall. Spoiler alert: The bands were better than the game. Read more…

Signals – ‘Sleep Talk’ [Review]

signals sleep talkTMMP readers know all too well how much we love Signals. I’ve raved over their Facial Furniture EP (a release that set me off on a fiction-writing spree now slowly giving way to a debut novel), told readers to watch them this year, practically ordered the recorded music industry to get involved with Signals ASAP, and contributed to the Kickstarter campaign that led to the creation of this track and its official video.

I’m not even remotely surprised that this tune and the accompanying visual extravaganza surpassed my expectations. No doubt, behind the scenes Signals must be working themselves to death – but on record and video the overall effect is one of grace, effortlessness, and consummate mastery. Sleep Talk is, quite frankly, a stunning tune that proves catchy songs don’t always have to conform to a rigid, immutable, and done-to-death formula in order to get the job done. Signals wave the math-rock flag with pride while inviting the wider world to wear its colours too – and their approach is clearly paying off. Read more…
