Bare Jams – ‘Rigglet EP’ [Review]

bare jams riggletAs I write this, I’m sitting outside in the sun. Birds are sitting on branches in the shade, there are no clouds in sight, and the temperature is just right. This EP is in my ears, and right now it feels like nothing else on Earth could soundtrack these moments better. Read more…

Jack Barnett – ‘Keeping Time’ [Review]

jack barnettSweet, lilting atmospheres and nuanced, intimate vocals. A fantastic understanding of dynamics, understated instrumentalism, well-crafted lyrics and massive repeatability. The support of a great producer who knows exactly how to bring out the best in a worthy artist, and elicit just the right shades of emotion in the end product’s listeners. Read more…

Princess Slayer / Nina Schofield / Ross Leppard / Jonas and Jane [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 12/5/14]

festibellyI need to work on my time management. Arriving all too tardy for this show, I missed most of Jonas & Jane’s set. However, I did catch their encore, a pretty and well-performed country-tinged tune. Check out their Soundcloud page for some very sweet tracks that I regret missing out on. Read more…

Hannah Dorman – ‘Do You Wanna Play?’ [Review]

hannah dormanGuildfordian promoters Genrebomb have a serious eye for talent. Those of you who missed last Tuesday’s show at the Boileroom need to catch up, and quick, because each of that night’s three acts are set for bright futures. Main support Following Foxes already have their eyes set on stadium stages, while Martha Paton is going to prove a dream come true for some lucky publishing house. Hannah Dorman / Following Foxes / Martha Paton [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 29/4/14]

hannah dorman boileroom genrebombI’ve said this many times before, I’ll tell anyone who’ll listen, and I’ll say it again: The Boileroom is my favourite independent live music venue. The same statements apply to this sentence too: Genrebomb know how to put on a show. Read more…

CeCe – ‘Framework EP’ [Review]

ceceI’ve said this before, but it’s always worth repeating: If your music would fit into a Tarantino or Rodriguez soundtrack, I’m going to love your music.

CeCe’s Framework EP definitely fits this bill. Read more…

Princess Slayer / Jamie Lenman / Natalie Ross / CeCe [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 31/1/14]

independent venue weekThe last couple of months have been a little quiet on the live review front – but this show marked the ideal moment to get back into the swing of things. As the Boileroom’s contribution to Independent Venue Week, it was guaranteed to be a stunner before the doors even opened; and it really goes without saying that the night was incredible, from start to finish. Jamie Lenman – ‘Muscle Memory’ [Review]

As regular readers will know, Jamie Lenman is a big deal where I’m from. My Facebook feed literally blew up with the release of the double-A-side Fizzy Blood/Pretty Please, news of his secret set at The Boileroom in Guildford, and the dates for his Heavy / Mellow Band’s recently completed tour. On top of all that, of course, there is this album. Not just a standard-length LP, but a 70-minute double album that takes in so many styles that I felt compelled to delay this review and let it all sink in and mature for a while. Now, however, it’s ready to go. Read more…

Princess Slayer / Oh So Quiet [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 8/11/13]

Opinion

As the first Musical Melting Pot Top 10 demonstrates, I’m a bit of a fan of Princess Slayer. Their first EP is stunning, and their live set – their first show ever, as part of the launch party for said EP – was, frankly, even better. Read more…
