Palm Reader – ‘Beside The Ones We Love’ [Review]

Palm Reader

Palm Reader don’t deal in niceties. Where some of their peers might opt for an expansive, solemn intro in order to lull listeners into a false sense of security, Palm Reader give it ten seconds before going straight for the throat. From there, I Watch The Fire Chase My Tongue starts proceedings as Palm Reader mean to go on – with a good metric fuckton of math-ridden, Dillinger Escape Plan-inspired brutality.

Beside The Ones We Love is the sound of a band shoving impatiently against its own limits – and then Read more…

The Hyena Kill [Live Review – The Stillery, Camden, 31/3/2015]

hyena kill stilleryLast damp and windy night, few sounds in Camden were as inviting as the loud, raucous rock’n’roll blasting from the Stillery. To be fair, there wasn’t much competition bar a handful of idiots driveby-harassing women, and a couple having a bust-up in the street – but Wicked Snakes would still have come out on top had the competition been much stiffer. Wicked Snakes deal in no-bullshit rock music in the same Zep-meets-Queens-of-the-Stone-Age vein as Them Crooked Vultures – and they do it damn well.

The Hyena Kill’s latest release, Blisters/Still Sick (reviewed on TMMP here) comes very, very Read more…

The Hyena Kill [Interview]

hyena kill stilleryWith a hotly tipped Hyena Kill showcase happening in London at the Stillery tomorrow evening, vocalist/guitarist Steven Dobb and TMMP got talking about said show, chaos, and swimming with sharks…

You have a showcase in London coming up tomorrow. How’re you feeling about it?

Really excited; every time we come and play in London it’s always an awesome show. Wicked Snakes are an incredible band as well – can’t wait to see them live.

How do you feel about the reception your new release Blisters / Still Sick [reviewed on TMMP here] has received so far?

It’s been really good. Both tracks are a bit more heavier and chaotic than our previous stuff so it’s good to see people getting into it and getting on board with Read more…

Therapy? – ‘Disquiet’ [Review]

Screen shot 2015-03-21 at 16.55.26I love this album. It’s dark, it’s dirty, it’s fucked up – and beyond that, its sheer depth and authenticity was enough to win me over from the opening bars of first track Still Hurts. There’s no trace of fakery or posturing here. None at all. Fucking hell.

Therapy?’s latest LP is stuffed full of Read more…

Stiff Bizkit / Spotlight Cannibal / Darko / Flesh Trench [Live Review – The Star, Guildford, 14/3/15]

stiff bizkit starI normally hate tribute acts. I’ve seen a fair few in my time, and they never fail to bring out a borderline-allergic reaction in me. After witnessing a Rage Against The Machine tribute whose guitarist looked like Alastair Campbell, I secretly swore that Read more…

Palm Reader – ‘Sing Out, Survivor’ [Review]

None of the above will come to mind while listening to Sing Out, Survivor. However, if you’re into dark and brutal hardcore, this might Read more…

Takedown Festival 2015 [Festival Review]

TD-23-01-15-ANNOUNCEMENTbThe first thing that needs to be said is this: Takedown Festival 2015 was really well-run. Organising an event that takes in over 40 bands across five stages, runs to schedule, and delivers a smooth, hassle-free and fun experience for punters is a serious ask – but the Takedown crew rose to the challenge and did an awesome job. Even the security were nice guys. Or maybe paid actors.

The second thing that needs to be said? Fuck Read more…

The Hyena Kill – ‘Blisters / Still Sick’ [Review]

Screen shot 2015-03-05 at 20.07.01Late one night during a week-long road trip, a former female friend and I stopped at a petrol station and bought a copy of a men’s magazine, from which she recited the following “Real Life Confessions” tale in the style of a BBC newsreader:

“Last year, I discovered that my now-ex husband was cheating on me. The day I found out, he Read more…

Dunderbeist – ‘Hyklere’ [Review]

dunderbeist hyklereXenophobia is experiencing a real renaissance in the UK right now. Anti-EU attitudes seem to be a real talking point around these parts – and frankly, I think they’re fucking stupid. European people are badass – and if you need proof of that fact in musical form, this album should do the trick.

Although Read more…
