With her new EP Forbidden Desire, future electronic superstar Fifi Rong continues to go from strength to strength. Click here for a review of the full EP, and read on as I chat to Fifi about Forbidden Desire, her creative process, and her biggest project to date…

Your new EP Forbidden Desire is out on April 29. How’re you feeling today?

I’m feeling good thanks – I’m looking forward to hearing how this EP is received!

While you were writing and recording Forbidden Desire, what was your creative process?

The Forbidden Desire EP is basically an outline for a bigger picture, leading into the new album I’m making. These songs came from many demos to go into production.

There was a lot of drama and ups and downs producing and recording the EP, but everything flowed very Read more…

The “experimental electronic” label has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, it allows you to accurately describe the otherwise uncategorizable; on the other, it’s extremely vague. Experimentalism is what keeps music moving forward, yet there are countless artists out there all pulling in different directions.

Lu’Ami uses a miniature arsenal of digital gizmos to create loop-based sonic structures with a Read more…

Brighton is one of Britain’s most open-minded cities – and last night, experimental electronic musician Lu’Ami’s “Better Project” launch party demonstrated that fact in singular style. Hosting and promoting a range of alternative-almost-everything artists, businesses, and organisations including Kalula Jewellery, Sisi Holistic Beauty, Brighton Girl, Harper & Finch, and the Brighton Permaculture Trust looked from the outside like a logistical nightmare. On the night, though, it all seemed to run smoothly.

Aside from launching a new brand called, appropriately, The Better Project, last night’s event also incorporated a sustainable Read more…

Fifi Rong is a future superstar. Very few musicians in general possess an instantly recognisable style of their own – but Fifi Rong has overcome one of the most common sticking points in the modern music business. Whether captivating audiences with beautifully eccentric live shows, or birthing wickedly seductive electronic tunes, Fifi Rong’s original creativity is something to marvel at.

Forbidden Desire’s title alone encapsulates Fifi Rong’s core characteristics: Exoticism and tasteful sensuality. We’re not talking about Read more…

If you’re a UK-based rock, metal, and/or punk fan, you need to be at Camden Rocks Festival this year. The lineup is fucking ear-watering, totalling 200 bands performing live and in your face over the course of one single day and multiple London venues.

At the time of writing, 80 bands still have yet to be announced – but of those we do know about, here are seven of my personal favourites:

SikTh

Sikth Live Crowd Shot Camden Rocks Festival 2016 Opacities

As any self-respecting tech-metal fan knows, SikTh are absolutely sick. Returning to shatter minds after an extended split via a series of rapturously received reunion shows and last December’s awe-inspiring Opacities, SikTh are continuing to Read more…

As I write these words, my mind is still fucking fried from last night. My neurons feel on strike, like my brain is being staffed by Tube drivers.

The parties to blame: Beardyman and his Dream Team.

Over the past year, Beardyman has evolved from a show-owning beatboxer to a bandleader with his sights set on musical revolution. Take it from me: Beardyman is well on his way to achieving that goal.

The Dream Team are one eight-headed, one-minded improvisational collective comprised of Read more…

Alyusha – ‘Black Butterfly’ [Review]

Alyusha Black Butterfly Song Review Soundcloud

I love trip-hop – and if you’re on the same page, you need to check Alyusha out ASAP.

Black Butterfly is a seriously self-assured masterclass in songwriting and composition. I’m struggling to move on, as all music journalists must, to the next act on my listening list even after an hour’s worth of Read more…

There isn’t another musician on Earth like Rémi Gallego. With The Algorithm’s new album (try saying that ten times really quickly) Brute Force dropping on April 1 after scoring 91% on TMMP here, and many ears awaiting its onslaught of labyrinthine synth lines and cortex-crunching grooves, TMMP caught up with Rémi Gallego via email to talk Brute Force, influences, creativity, and thoughtful neighbourly feedback…

Your new album Brute Force is out on April 1. How’re you feeling about it?

I can’t wait to finally unveil this album. It’s my proudest achievement so far and I’m excited that people can finally hear it!

You probably know how it feels to follow a band across the immaterial expanse of the Internet for years, and get super hyped up when you finally get the chance to see them live. When you were going through that experience, a lot of thoughts probably crossed your mind.

Is the show going to be worth the trip?

What if it all goes wrong?

That kind of thing.

Imagine, then, the level of pressure placed on the band themselves. When expectations run high, you need to Read more…

Malumi – ‘Monsters And Fireflies’ [Review]

Malumi - Monsters And Fireflies - Album Review

A jack of all trades is a master of none.

Or so we’re told. It sounds like common sense – and it is. But common sense isn’t always accurate.

Between them, Klaire de Lys and Sara Rose have almost every art, craft, and entertainment-related outlet covered. From comedy writing and lifestyle blogging to award-winning YouTube makeup tutorials, fantasy novels, webcomics, sculpture, visual art, and a head-spinning range of future projects in the pipeline, Klaire and Sara are both pretty busy, to say the least.

So, that makes them jacks (or Jills?) of multiple trades. Following the apparently immutable logic of common sense, Malumi and their debut album Monsters And Fireflies should be mediocre at best. This review, in turn, should be Read more…
