If you’ve never heard of Arcane Roots, believe me – you’re missing out. As you read this, the prog-enamoured London-based trio are in the process of making big waves in the UK’s underground rock scene, winning fans left, right, centre, up, down, forward, backward, diagonally, and maybe inside-out if that’s even possible. Here are a few reasons why TMMP is set on raving about these guys until grey hair and the grave begin to beckon…

1) In This Town Of Such Weather.

You can be certain that sooner or later, Arcane Roots are going to drop a massive breakout hit – and when that time comes, it’ll be important to remind the world that their back catalogue is all killer, no filler too. For TMMP, In This Town Of Such Weather (from 2011 mini-album Left Fire) is a Read more…

Heights / Agent / Sumer / Toska [Live Review – The Barfly, Camden, 31/7/2015]

Heights

South West Trains can drill a hole in a mirror, and fuck themselves.

Fortunately, TMMP overcame assorted transportation disasters to see Toska (95%) open a lineup bookended by two bands who’ve been slowly making their way north of Brighton together over the past few months. This set was easily – easily – Toska’s best live showing to date, mainly thanks to an absolutely immense sound job. Studio-grade tones, songs equal parts Armageddon and ecstatic release, a level of tightness that borders on pure telepathy…these guys are the perfect instrumental prog-metal band at this point. Judging from the amount of head-bobbing going on, every single earlycomer knew it, too. I’d be willing to bet that more than a few of them are in neck braces today.

Following Toska is a real challenge – and Sumer (83%) Read more…

Seething Akira [Interview]

Seething Akira

Seething Akira are more than a badass name. They’ve spent the last couple of years pushing themselves in all directions, snapping up support slots with the likes of Hacktivist, Heart Of A Coward, Don Broco, Subsource, Sonic Boom Six, Skindred, and The Algorithm while working on a slowly growing set of winning recorded releases. Their latest, Airstrike, is out now, and reviewed on TMMP here. With the band swept up in a high-pressure post-release whirlwind, TMMP got them talking about their origin story, intimate tattoos, flying carpets, and Kanye West…

Your new single Airstrike is out now. How excited are you?

Our exciteometer is close to maximum! It’s been far too long since we’ve released new material, so we’re hyped to get it out there!

How would you describe your sound to an inebriated stranger?

Sweat-dance-core.

What’s Seething Akira’s origin story?

Charlie was producing hip-hop for artists around the world for a couple of years, but then decided he wanted to hit the stage and also create a hybrid style. After finding Kit as the vocalist on the Isle of Wight, they basically Read more…

Black Peaks [Underground Greats]

Black Peaks

Since 2013, Black Peaks have wasted little time in establishing themselves as math-rock stars in the making. TMMP has championed them for some time, and for many a good reason. Here are five of them:

1) Their tracks are fully immersive.

Some bands soundtrack your life in a nostalgic sense, pushing and pulling you into the past, running over pains, worries, and victories alike. The music’s there, right in your ears – but so are some things you might rather forget.

Black Peaks’ tracks take a different tack. Songs like Glass Built Castles and Saviour will use up all your mental bandwidth, pushing the world away and allowing real relief from everyday stresses and strains. These guys will bend your brain into a mind-pretzel, twisting time in ways that would leave Stephen Hawking Read more…

ArcTanGent 2015 [Festival Preview]

ArcTanGent

If you’re a regular TMMP reader, you appreciate the fact that the best music is created without boundaries. Although normal isn’t always boring, stepping outside your comfort zone is essential if you want to start adding the spice of variety to your life.

ArcTanGent has a stellar reputation for hosting bands whose music is free from everyday restraints. Common time signatures and orthodox melodies are a rarity at this UK-based festival, and progressively-minded pilgrims travel from far and wide to its south Bristol site to share their passions with likeminded others. This year, TMMP will be among them.

ArcTanGent’s core philosophy is respectable enough – but a quick glance at its lineup provides much to start salivating over. From big names like Cult Of Luna, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Deafheaven, 65daysofstatic and The Fall Of Troy to solid Read more…

Between The Buried And Me – ‘Coma Ecliptic’ [Review]

Between The Buried And Me

For prog-metal heavyweights Between The Buried And Me, less has never been more. They’ve built a solid career on expansive songs crammed with everything but the kitchen sink – and latest offering Coma Ecliptic sees BTBAM continue, appropriately enough, to progress.

The most immediate sign of forward movement on Coma Ecliptic is the crystal-clear Dream Theater influence that permeates the whole album from second track The Coma Machine onwards. From the clipped and spacious production job to periodically Petrucci-esque guitar work and nods in the direction of DT keyboard wizard Jordan Rudess, it’s clear that Read more…

Seething Akira – ‘Airstrike’ [Review]

Seething Akira

Seething Akira are a sick live band – and this tune always goes down explosively when they hit stages across the country.

A super-fat chrome-plated hybrid of metal and drum ‘n’ bass that fans of the sadly defunct Pendulum will find instantly addictive, Airstrike is guaranteed to snap Read more…

2000 Trees 2015 [Festival Review]

Few things in life feel as good as immersing yourself in something you love. Diving deep into awesomeness, allowing the world’s worries to slip away, replacing baggage with better things. Escaping.

Of all the modern world’s escape hatches, music remains one of the most enigmatic and rewarding options. However, everyday life offers few opportunities for extended periods of musical immersion. You can walk down the street under headphones, spend a lazy Sunday in the company of your sound system with the curtains drawn, or spend an evening at a top-class venue taking in a few bands – but for many music fanatics, such experiences still don’t go deep enough.

2000 Trees certainly does. Situated on an out-of-the-way Gloucestershire farm in a 3G-free dead zone, the Trees site is an ideal location for digital disconnection, and reconnection with simpler things. The feeling of sun on your face, wind on your skin, and pure live music vibrating every cell in your body.

Arcane Roots’ (95%) set was the perfect reward for an Read more…

Hacktivist [Interview]

Hacktivist

In the final instalment of TMMP’s 2000 Trees interview series, Hacktivist talk Korn cameos, influential gigs, and the foundations of political change…

You’re set to lay waste to 2000 Trees 2015. Do you have anything special planned for your set?

I think as a band, we treat each show the same no matter where we are or who is watching. We believe every H show is special! So yeah, we do have something special: a Hacktivist set!

What’s the craziest occurrence that’s ever taken place during a Hacktivist set?

When we toured with Korn, the fans started screaming so fucking loud out of nowhere. I was on stage waving my arms side to side with the crowd, and realised Fieldy was right next to me doing the same with his bass! Considering I’ve been listening to them since I was like 11, that was definitely a crazy moment in my life.

Hacktivist lyrics tend toward the political. What life experiences first sparked your political passions?

Like any kids, initially we were oblivious to so much that was going on in the world around us. It’s so easy to get so trapped in the cycle of the system that you don’t see anything other than Read more…

Cleft [Interview]

Cleft

Cleft are fucking nuts. Some bands just grab your attention through sheer force of intent – and this instrumental turbo-prog duo is definitely one of them. TMMP got talking to guitarist Dan about their upcoming set at 2000 Trees – and this is what came out…

You’re due to hit 2000 Trees 2015. How’re you feeling?

We’ve had a hectic and challenging few months due to illness so it feels like it’s come out of the blue to me actually. We’ve been burrowed away writing loads of new material for our next album, so we’ve not had much time to think about gigs and festivals. It’s only now that it’s so close that I’m realising we’re actually doing this festival, playing with so many amazing bands. It’s going to be an excellent weekend!

Musically, you’re pretty out there. If an inebriated stranger were to ask what you sound like, what would you say in response?

I’d describe ourselves (to an enormously drunk and unmusical stranger) like a cross between Yes, Slayer, and Mr Blobby. But to a normal human person, we’ve been categorising ourselves as “turbo-prog,” which seems to have stuck now.

We play riff-based progressive music that we’ve condensed down to the length of an average to short pop tune due to our very short attention spans. We’re exactly the same as the Beatles – if the Beatles were an instrumental, gear-obsessed drum/guitar duo with a penchant for filthy riffs and odd groovy rhythms…

What made you decide to stick with the guitar-drums duo format? Would you consider expanding the lineup?

I think we just both thrive on the challenge of Read more…
