Cleft – ‘Wrong’ [Review]

Cleft Wrong Album Review 2016 Band

If you need proof that black clouds can have silver linings, here it is.

Cleft pretty much define modern instrumental math-rock, summoning and summarily mutating the spirits of everyone from Tom Morello to Metallica, Muse, Biffy Clyro and Royal Blood while ensuring such Read more…

You probably know how it feels to follow a band across the immaterial expanse of the Internet for years, and get super hyped up when you finally get the chance to see them live. When you were going through that experience, a lot of thoughts probably crossed your mind.

Is the show going to be worth the trip?

What if it all goes wrong?

That kind of thing.

Imagine, then, the level of pressure placed on the band themselves. When expectations run high, you need to Read more…

Bear Makes Ninja – ‘Shenanagrams’ [Review]

Bear Makes Ninja - Shenanagrams - Review

Bear Makes Ninja are more than just a badass band name.

These guys have been making waves in the post-/math-rock world for a fair few years now, and Shenanagrams is guaranteed to plant the Bear Makes Ninja flag firmly in that niche’s bedrock. If you’re of the mind to criticise Bear Makes Ninja’s musicianship, you’re a fuckwit; this album offers many a glorious, grandeur-fuelled moment that will bring big grins to the faces of math-oriented musos across Read more…

Calling Marco Minnemann prolific is a little bit of an understatement. This guy is easily one of the hardest-working drummers on the weirder side of showbiz, playing on no fewer than five of TMMP’s Top Albums Of 2015. That’s one studio album (Tres Caballeros) and one live album (Culture Clash Live!) as part of fusion trio The Aristocrats; one studio album with guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani (Shockwave Supernova, TMMP’s top album of the year alongside Jon Gomm’s Live In The Acoustic Asylum); one studio album with Porcupine Tree frontman and prog godfather Steven Wilson (Hand. Cannot. Erase.); and, finally, an 18-track beast of a solo album called Celebration.

Phew. That’s just Marco Minnemann’s recorded output, too; add in countless Read more…

Anyone who’s ever played a video game will be familiar with the stresses and strains involved in beating the Boss Level. The anxious anticipation that greets the arrival of some hideous, monolithic fucker with fire breath and laser eyes, capable of annihilating you in an instant; the adrenaline surging around your body as you dodge and attack, seeking out a weak spot; the glorious feeling of relief and victory as it finally falls to the ground and you level up.

Toska’s EP launch, celebrating the maiden voyage of Ode To The Author, was their first serious Boss-Level show – and watching them win was Read more…

Poly-Math [Interview]

Poly-Math (Interview)

If mind-blowing instrumental math-rock is your musical delicacy of choice, meet Poly-Math – if you haven’t already. They’re currently sitting on one hell of a debut mini-album, which is called Melencolia, was reviewed here for your delectation, and contains three ultra-intense epics that will have you scratching your head in wonderment for months to come.

Here, Poly-Math bassist Joe Branton talks about Melencolia‘s presently-missing fourth track, the joys of instrumental music, and why Poly-Math are on the lookout for the world’s biggest inflatable bananas… Read more…

G3 2016: The Aristocrats Joe Satriani Steve Vai

Guitar fans: start your salivating!

Last year, Joe Satriani’s Shockwave Supernova was named TMMP’s Top Album Of 2015, alongside Jon Gomm’s Live In The Acoustic Asylum. Also present on that list were The Aristocrats (with Tres Caballeros and Culture Clash Live), and the inimitable Steve Vai (with Stillness In Motion: Vai Live In L.A.).

Doing something different is difficult.

In a world obsessed with trends and fads that last a microsecond, the pressure is always on to deliver something palatable to a mass audience with the attention span of a brain-damaged goldfish. With his new album Lunaria, Danimal Cannon is ignoring the seductive pull of the same-but-slightly-different, and delivering something really different.

Danimal Cannon is a chiptune master, capable of blending multiple genres, timbres, instruments, and moods into a long-player that is an acquired taste, but a legitimately rewarding taste nonetheless. After I listened to Lunaria in its entirety and reviewed it here, this interview could only kick off with one question…

Your new album Lunaria broke my brain, in a good way! So my opening question has to be: Just how the hell did you make it? How did the tracks on Lunaria go from idea to reality? Read more…

Poly-Math – ‘Melencolia’ [Review]

Poly-Math - 'Melencolia' (Review)

Poly-Math are fast becoming Names in the British math- / post-rock underground, and rightly so. 2015’s Reptile churned a fair few minds and pricked up many an ear – and now, Poly-Math’s debut mini-album Melencolia is set to take them up a level.

Look at the running times for each of Melencolia’s three tracks Read more…
