There are bands who push the boundaries.

Iggy Pop is pretty good at picking out quality collaborators. In 1977 – almost forty years ago – Pop and David Bowie produced a pair of legendary albums in The Idiot and Lust For Life. Both were billed as Iggy Pop solo albums – as was this year’s Post Pop Depression, produced by Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age and featuring the additional talents of Queens’ Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders.

Post Pop Depression: Live At The Royal Albert Hall is a full-scale onslaught of art-rock songs cherry-picked from the aforementioned albums. It also showcases one of the music world’s most famed and infamous characters in Read more…

Fall Out Boy have attracted a lot of hate over the years – especially as they’ve gotten poppier and poppier. To some, they’re shiny, glossy sellouts – but really, Fall Out Boy’s popularity is just the inevitable product of a knack for writing great songs, making them an ideal gateway band capable of pointing younger fans toward more mature influences. If your lyrics and vocal melodies stick in people’s heads and you don’t push them away with too much intensity and ear-warping dissonance, you’re going to attract fans.

Pop is pop because it’s popular. That’s just the way it works Read more…

When most people discuss bands in real life, they rarely do so using hundreds or thousands of words; they sum it up succinctly. Face to face with a metal-enamoured mate in a rush, I’d describe Exist Immortal as “a sick tech-metal band,” and recommend the person in question check them out. But if that same guy or girl hadn’t yet heard Meshuggah, that same task would become far harder; pushed for time, I’d tell them just to listen to Nothing and brace themselves.

On Darkness Of An Age, Exist Immortal managed to combine an impressive range of influences from the increasingly ubiquitous Meshuggah to Fear Factory and Devin Townsend. The result? Read more…

Pop-punk often gets a bad rep, with good reason. A good number of pop-punk bands prefer to go at it half-assed, pushing everything they can into live showmanship in a desperate effort to make up for the fact that they suck. This feels more true for new bands than old – but maybe that’s just because the earlier waves of pop-punk did everything so damn well that they set the bar almost impossibly high.

Bowling For Soup are the total package Read more…

Back in TMMP’s distant past, I never made a secret of my love for Princess Slayer’s music. From the night they first emerged onto the UK’s music scene, vocalist Casey Lim and drummer/producer Vince Welch obviously had what it takes to take them as far as they desire to go. Princess Slayer’s Living EP was golden, and they’ve become Glastonbury regulars in recent times as well as navigating live lineup changes that can and do cripple so many up and coming acts Read more…

Meshuggah’s entire discography can be summed up in one word: Intense. Having birthed the modern prog-metal genre known as djent, the Swedish titans remain one of the heavy music world’s most influential collectives, synonymous with clinically precise grooves and hypercomplex rhythmic structures. The Violent Sleep Of Reason, however, is a little less surgical than before.

By recording The Violent Sleep Of Reason live, Meshuggah have found a new way to get heavier – by giving the production a raw, classic-album vibe. The results sound fresher than much modern metal, which tends to push the digital envelope too far and wind up sapped of soul and vitality. This is Meshuggah at their most…whisper it…organic. Unless you’ve been living under a rock-free rock for the last several decades, AC/DC will need little introduction. Since Phil Rudd joined the Aussie legends back in 1975, he’s played on 15 of AC/DC’s 18 studio albums, racking up over 200 million global sales in the process. Highway To Hell, Back In Black, It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)…many AC/DC worshippers have since tried to imitate or beat those guys at their own game, but nobody would seriously claim to have succeeded.

Rock star trappings aside, it’s not all been an easy ride. Personal issues, addiction, and even an eight-month home detention sentence have all set back the release of Head Job, Phil Rudd’s first solo album. So, the question now becomes: Is it worth checking out? Read more…
