Everyone is angry right now. Not just angry, in fact – infuriated, livid, countless light years beyond merely “pissed off”. Whether you’re talking rejoicing extremists such as the KKK and Al Quaeda or the millions still compulsively facepalming themselves while trying to come to terms with the fact that Donald Trump, a minted and racist reality TV star, is now the world’s most powerful – and dangerous – man, everyone has anger in common no matter which side they’re on.

If there’s a bright side to one of the biggest political shitstorms in recent memory, it’s this: Read more…

Dorje are unmissable.

Their name may be hard to pronounce – “Door-Jay” rather than popular alternatives such as “Doorway,” “Door-Hey,” and “Doorjuh” – but Dorje have nonetheless made their name synonymous with increasingly brutal prog-tinted tunes that stand right on the borderline between rock and metal. Last night’s central London location, legendary rock venue The Borderline, was therefore an appropriate place for Dorje to strut their stuff. Name a groove-heavy band worth knowing, and they’re likely to have graced The Borderline’s subterranean stage at some point in their careers Read more…

Thomas Giles has a pretty cool day job. As Tommy Rogers, he fronts American prog metal outfit Between The Buried And Me, adding idiosyncratic touches to albums like Colors and Coma Ecliptic. During downtime, Thomas Giles emerges with fresh music that is itself unique and compelling.

Velcro Kid begins with Immersion Highway – a song that sounds like a Muse remix until Thomas Giles’ vocal enters. From that point on there’s no doubt as to who you’re listening to, although Read more…

Iggy Pop is pretty good at picking out quality collaborators. In 1977 – almost forty years ago – Pop and David Bowie produced a pair of legendary albums in The Idiot and Lust For Life. Both were billed as Iggy Pop solo albums – as was this year’s Post Pop Depression, produced by Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age and featuring the additional talents of Queens’ Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders.

Post Pop Depression: Live At The Royal Albert Hall is a full-scale onslaught of art-rock songs cherry-picked from the aforementioned albums. It also showcases one of the music world’s most famed and infamous characters in Read more…

Fall Out Boy have attracted a lot of hate over the years – especially as they’ve gotten poppier and poppier. To some, they’re shiny, glossy sellouts – but really, Fall Out Boy’s popularity is just the inevitable product of a knack for writing great songs, making them an ideal gateway band capable of pointing younger fans toward more mature influences. If your lyrics and vocal melodies stick in people’s heads and you don’t push them away with too much intensity and ear-warping dissonance, you’re going to attract fans.

Pop is pop because it’s popular. That’s just the way it works Read more…

Wembley Arena is drowning in not-quite-November rain. Within its cavernous confines, the metal-enamoured masses gather to chat and watch impatiently as an onstage drum tech runs through a standard-issue soundcheck. Slowly, showtime approaches.

Arenas are often accused of sucking the soul out of live shows – but what they actually do is present performers with the ultimate challenge, that of Read more…

On the way to this show, I was stopped for speeding. I was let off with a warning: Slow down in the future.

This is not advice offered to rock bands – and even if it were, The Pretty Reckless still wouldn’t listen. Who You Selling For – The Pretty Reckless’s third album, due out on October 21 and reviewed in full here – is already in the process of pushing one of the biggest female-fronted rock bands of all time into the stratosphere, their near-matchless power outpowering the doubt and hate that serves as the music world’s equivalent of gravity Read more…

Unless you’ve been living under a rock-free rock for the last several decades, AC/DC will need little introduction. Since Phil Rudd joined the Aussie legends back in 1975, he’s played on 15 of AC/DC’s 18 studio albums, racking up over 200 million global sales in the process. Highway To Hell, Back In Black, It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)…many AC/DC worshippers have since tried to imitate or beat those guys at their own game, but nobody would seriously claim to have succeeded.

Rock star trappings aside, it’s not all been an easy ride. Personal issues, addiction, and even an eight-month home detention sentence have all set back the release of Head Job, Phil Rudd’s first solo album. So, the question now becomes: Is it worth checking out? Read more…
