Samoans [Interview]

Samoans

As a lifelong Deftones fanatic, any band willing to incorporate even the tiniest hint of said legends’ sound into their own noise is more than welcome in my earholes. Samoans do what all the best bands do with their influences: chuck them all into a metaphorical blender along with some extra-special spice, shred the lot to hell, and see what comes out when it’s tipped upside-down. TMMP talked to Samoans guitarist Oli about his band’s upcoming set at 2000 Trees Festival, and much more…

You’re due to play 2000 Trees this year. How’re you feeling about it?

Pretty excited really. We did ArcTanGent festival last year which was great, so hoping for a similar vibe. Loads of bands we absolutely love are playing. I missed the Mclusky shows last year, so I’m looking forward to that.

What can the curious expect from your set?

Loud bits, quiet bits, and occasionally bits that are somewhere between loud and quiet. We’ll be playing songs from our debut album Rescue, which we released a year ago. We might drop in a couple of new ones for good measure.

What’s your band’s origin story?

Dan and Calvin met at a birthday party. I don’t know the details but it probably involved a dispute over pass the parcel. They played overly complicated tap-happy music for a few years with a number of different drummers until Read more…

Rolo Tomassi – ‘Grievances’ [Review]

Rolo Tomassi

Four albums into their career, you might expect Rolo Tomassi to chill things out and give themselves a breather for once. But have they?

…Kind of, actually.

Grievances gets going with Estranged, an idiosyncratically Tomassi amalgam of hectic skin-beating barrages, stabbing and churning guitars, and a relatively low-key section that brings to mind dark alleys and glistening knives rather than sunshine and fluffiness. Raumdeuter takes Read more…

F.O.E.S. [Interview]

F.O.E.S.

F.O.E.S. are a mix of Deftones, Karnivool, and Arcane Roots – and if that doesn’t sound like a sick combo to you, then go take a long hard look in the mirror and think about how badly society has failed you. F.O.E.S.’ new EP Antecedence is absolutely stunning – and with just less than a month to go before it’s out, TMMP got talking to guitarist Joe Danher about the new release, hunger, and hat disasters… Read more…

2000 Trees 2015 [Festival Preview]

2000 Trees

Since 2007, 2000 Trees has evolved into one of the UK alternative music scene’s most treasured institutions. Combining a fiercely independent ethos with a super-positive DIY attitude and the backing of many brilliant musicians, this festival is not one to miss. F.O.E.S. – ‘Antecedence’ [Review]

F.O.E.S.

Show me a band who are one third Deftones, one third Karnivool, and one third Arcane Roots, and I’ll show you a band I’ll happily rave about until the end of time. F.O.E.S. (aka Fall Of Every Sparrow) may have an awkward name, but their music is fucking incredible. They’ve definitely found the fast track to instant approval at this end.

Antecedence kicks in in style with Rival Thrones – an immediate and crystal-clear nod in the direction of Chino Moreno & co. that merges massive, churning riffs with epic Read more…

No Consequence [Interview]

No Consequence

Surrey-based tech metal outfit No Consequence are on the rise for a reason. These guys embody everything a modern metal fan could reasonably ask for: flawless technique, dense and intense tracks, and intelligent messages behind it all. With NC’s third album Vimana out as of yesterday, TMMP talked to vocalist Kaan Tasan about his band’s latest effort, grooves, and change…

Your new album Vimana is due out soon. What thoughts/feelings are going through your heads right now?

Well, we’re obviously excited and very proud of what we’ve accomplished with Vimana. But it’s always a stressful time having spent so long creating something, then releasing it to the world. You always want a positive response, but that doesn’t always happen [laughs]!

Your lyrics are very socially aware. Did any specific experiences and/or people first inspire you to address social issues/politics/religion/etc?

I guess for me personally, it’s just life. That’s what inspires me the most, the Read more…

Slam Dunk Festival 2015 [Festival Review]

Slam Dunk

From the outside, alternative music festivals can seem intimidating. Certain corners of the media choose to portray alternative music fans as universally antisocial and self destructive. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.

Festivals are full of people out for nothing more than a good time. Great bands, passionate fans, and meticulous organisation are all essential pieces of the puzzle – and Slam Dunk’s organisers provided the former and latter. In Wolverhampton, everybody won.

Behind black t-shirts and often morbid iconography, the themes of the day were love, respect, and gratitude. Second stage openers Shvpes set the tone with a rapturously received hometown set packed full of Read more…

Outside The Coma – ‘Flavour Of The Weak’ [Review]

Outside the Coma

What do you get if you mix hectic metal, frantic screaming, a few poppy na-na-nas, visuals inspired by Japanese TV, anxious electronic elements, and lyrical lines set on shredding lame talent shows and celebrity culture?

Answer: Read more…

No Consequence – ‘Vimana’ [Review]

No Consequence

No Consequence are known as purveyors of top-notch tech metal. Their instrumental skill is indisputable – as is the level of social awareness amplified through past classics such as Coerce:Conform and Enemy of Logic. Beyond that point, you still have to take pristine production, ball-bursting heaviness, and shattered-mirror riffage into account before you get the whole picture.

Vimana sees the introduction of a new side to No Consequence. Their signature blend of fragmented riffs, disjointed melodies, and Read more…
