The Weeks / The Apache Relay / The Greasy Slicks / Gold Phoenix [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 19/1/15]
I have no excuse for missing most of Gold Phoenix’s intense garage-rocking set. I’m just a bad person.
The Greasy Slicks, on the other hand, are good. As a matter of fact, they’re more than just good – they’re fucking immense. Flat-out fucked drums, flamethrower guitars, and punchy and ultra-tight bass combined to create a formidably spicy Southern rock-flavoured whole; quite frankly, the Greasy Slicks name should be considered a seal of none-more-graceful-while-grinding-in-the-dirt quality. Yes.
The Apache Relay play folk rock with a steely, dignified backbone – and nail all the hallmarks of their chosen genre. Their set was worth the trip. Mississippi natives The Weeks, however, were the real stars of the show, owning their headline slot and entertaining a mass of enthusiastic fans with heaped helpings of alien authenticity and loose-limbed party rock. Overall, this was a night that Guildford’s resident Southern rock fans will take a long while to forget.
