CHON – ‘Woohoo!’ [Review]

chon woohooThis EP is aptly titled. If you’re feeling starved of intense and immense prog-fusion brilliance, then you should do two things: Read more TMMP, and check out CHON. They’ll seduce you effortlessly with opening acoustic-centric track Super Potion, and leave you wondering what the fuck just happened by the time Knot is finished. Not bad for just two tunes.

Throughout Woohoo!, it feels like anything could happen – and once Ecco gets going, it does. Whereas most of CHON’s peers are happy to stick to no-holds-barred instrumental insanity, these guys forge their own path with carefully orchestrated and well-executed vocal work laid over slinky grooves and almost poppy guitar work that brings to mind the UK’s own Dragons That Make Love To Pandas. Meanwhile, Sketch drops back into quirky fusion territory; Dust takes a breather with lush classical acoustic work; and the closing Suda is raw, warm, and classy.

Overall, Woohoo! is a widely varied and dynamically exciting mini-album full of excitement, joy, and still more excitement. CHON are fun, inventive, and virtuosic – and I can’t wait to hear what their full-length album is going to sound like.
