Outpatients [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 21/10/13]
Opinion
Outpatients’ most obvious selling point is the presence of ex-SikTh vocalist Mikee Goodman, but this was much more than a one-man show. Co-vocalist Yuuri, an awesome talent imported from Tokyo, blends perfectly with Mikee’s trademark smorgasbord of screams and is a hypnotic performer in her own right. But to be totally honest, the guitarist was a real highlight for me – this girl is a total machine, dishing out a metal guitar masterclass while having fun doing it and (most importantly) not being afraid to show it either. Not to take away from the efforts of the other two-thirds of the rhythm section – they were bank-vault airtight, setting up a range of twistedly sexualised grooves while Mikee and Yuuri bounced around like uncontrollable balls of musical energy.
There was a downside, however. This band thrive on the audience’s energy. They’re practically fuelled by eye contact and crowd movement – and although there was a fair amount of appreciation forthcoming from the audience, I did get the impression that many of them weren’t quite prepared for Outpatients’ onslaught. In the right room Outpatients will (not might – will) be fucking explosive. But in any case, despite a tepid crowd Outpatients gave more than 100%, and earned themselves a new fan in the process.
