Muse – ‘Drones’ [Review]

Muse

Muse have done it all. They’ve stuck together for over two decades, released seven albums, toured the world, dominated festivals and stadiums, sold some 17m long-playing units – you name it, they’ve done it. Now, their latest effort is out there exploring now-familiar themes (global conspiracies, alienation, disconnection, etc) from the perspective of an individual who becomes indoctrinated into (and eventually rebels against) the modern Western military system.

Undeniably proggy (a good thing here at TMMP), expansive, and entertaining, Drones mainly wins during Read more…

Pat Mastelotto [Interview]

Pat Mastelotto

Pat Mastelotto is a busy guy. His CV is a mile long, including his current position as King Crimson’s drumming lynchpin; one third of acclaimed virtuoso trio Stick Men (alongside Tony Levin and Markus Reuter); and a huge range of additional projects including KoMaRa (whose self-titled album was reviewed on TMMP here), and O.R.k. (whose album Inflamed Rides received the TMMP treatment here). This is an epic-length interview Pat Mastelotto treated with the same generous attitude as anything with which he becomes involved.

Whether you’re a fan of King Crimson, Stick Men, KoMaRa, O.R.k., the man himself, or any of his other innumerable projects, you’ll find a ton of fascinating info here. Read on… Read more…

O.R.k. – ‘Inflamed Rides’ [Review]

O.R.K.

If you’re looking for something unique, you’ve come to the right place. O.R.k. could be described using the often-derided term “supergroup” (its members hailing from bands as diverse as Obake, King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, and Marta Sui Tubi), but its music will appeal to anyone with a taste for diverse and differentiated rock. This is not so much a novelty project as one with the potential to go any distance under its own steam.

Inflamed Rides takes in everything from Tool-esque textures (opener Jellyfish) to Rage Against Read more…

Delta Sleep [Interview]

Delta Sleep

If you love math rock, you’ll adore Delta Sleep. Watch out for their new album Twin Galaxies (out June 15 via Big Scary Monsters and reviewed on TMMP here), and in the meantime, read forth and discover more about the new album, Delta Sleep’s creative process, and their drummer’s Haribo addiction…

Your new album Twin Galaxies is coming out soon. What thoughts/feelings are going through your heads right now?

Glen: I can’t wait. These songs feel like they’ve been with us (but not actually physically recorded anywhere) for ages. I think it feels like even longer for Dev and I, as we wrote parts of them with our previous bassist and drummer (Adam and Maria).

Devin: A lot of mixed emotions. I’m mostly excited but sometimes feel Read more…

Slam Dunk Festival 2015 [Festival Review]

Slam Dunk

From the outside, alternative music festivals can seem intimidating. Certain corners of the media choose to portray alternative music fans as universally antisocial and self destructive. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.

Festivals are full of people out for nothing more than a good time. Great bands, passionate fans, and meticulous organisation are all essential pieces of the puzzle – and Slam Dunk’s organisers provided the former and latter. In Wolverhampton, everybody won.

Behind black t-shirts and often morbid iconography, the themes of the day were love, respect, and gratitude. Second stage openers Shvpes set the tone with a rapturously received hometown set packed full of Read more…

Outside The Coma – ‘Flavour Of The Weak’ [Review]

Outside the Coma

What do you get if you mix hectic metal, frantic screaming, a few poppy na-na-nas, visuals inspired by Japanese TV, anxious electronic elements, and lyrical lines set on shredding lame talent shows and celebrity culture?

Answer: Read more…

Joe Satriani – ‘On Peregrine Wings’ [Review]

Joe Satriani

Joe Satriani is widely acknowledged as one of a kind. The instrumental guitar maestro’s magnum opus Surfing With The Alien kicked instrumental rock guitar into the stratosphere way back in 1987 – and Satch is still keeping his creative momentum going almost 30 years later. Satriani’s new album Shockwave Supernova features TMMP regular Marco Minnemann on drums alongside Read more…

Arcane Roots / Carnival Kids / Gallery Circus [Live Review – The Boileroom, Guildford, 21/5/2015]

Arcane Roots

Some nights are destined to be awesome. While most opening acts are content to warm up the crowd a bit, Gallery Circus pushed the Boileroom’s earlycomers as far as possible using massive Led Zeppelin-esque riffs, heavy beats, and buckets of raw energy. Then Carnival Kids came on and nailed a raft of angular, square-rooted and danceable math rock tracks including Here They Have Guns, The Future Is MineMechanism, and Lateral Living. Deep in the crowd, heads were banged, hips were swayed, and pulses were raised.

The evening’s headliners likely need little introduction. Arcane Roots have been making increasingly Read more…

The Decoy [Interview]

The Decoy

Sometimes a new discovery blows your mind in the best way possible. Welsh prog mentalists the Decoy certainly did that with their new EP Parasites, due out on May 25 via Ghoulish Records and sure to get you wondering what the fuck just happened when it finally beats on your eardrums. For this interview, there was only one way to begin…

Your new EP Parasites is a real mindfuck – so I have to open with a horribly clichéd question: Who are your influences? Where do those ideas come from?!

Joel (Williams, bass/vocals): Difficult question! We all have Read more…

Delta Sleep – ‘Twin Galaxies’ [Review]

Delta Sleep

This album should come with a warning: If you try to air-guitar along to it, your fingers will wind up in knots. Imagine turning up in A&E with twisted knot-hands and trying to explain it to the triage nurse. Exactly. Stay safe, yeah?

Since 2010, Delta Sleep have specialised in a brand of math-rock that is, frankly, mad as a lorry. Their world is one within which Radiohead harmonies co-exist warily with difficult-to-decode-let-alone-digest rhythmic patterns and Read more…
