Martha Paton – ‘Panoramic’ [Review]

martha paton panoramicAfter this weekend’s metal-focussed extravaganza, I decided to look for something a little more summery. Fortunately I didn’t have to search for long, thanks to a certain TMMP favourite.

Whereas Martha Paton’s Suitcase Full of Stories EP comprised a very stripped-down set of tracks that showcased her impressively developed tunecrafting skills above all else, Panoramic starts off with a fresh full-band version of previous EP closer My Foolish Thief. This time around, there’s a definite sense of growth in terms of bells and whistles – but the extra instrumentation is kept in check, employed solely to serve the song.

Strings, percussion, and backing vocals give second track When We Get Old extra emotive impact and aesthetic depth; As Far As I’m Concerned sees the return of Paton’s trusted ukelele; and closing track For You gets a busy countrified treatment that is nothing if not absorbing. Overall, this is a very tasteful next step for Martha Paton, and one that’s sure to satisfy old fans and folk-loving newcomers alike.
