Pressurehead: ‘The Live EP’ [Review]
If rock was human, it would be fast approaching retirement and looking forward to a nice, relaxing, peaceful existence free of the endless struggles against the enforced conformity faced by every person over the course of their adult lives. Over the course of its near-sixty-year existence rock has also spawned a great many offspring that took up the fight against cultural paralysis and inertia. From Sgt. Pepper and Hendrix to punk, prog, and post-rock, each generation has created its own unique take on rock’s original blueprint, helping to evolve the genre in the process.
However, before a band can break the rules, it needs to really understand what those rules actually are. And listening to Pressurehead’s The Live EP, it’s clear that they’ve assimilated the rules of rock and, in this case, grunge. Their music is in-your-face, aggressive, and passionate. But the problem is that thousands of bands before them have already drained this river dry. Some of them have moved on to more ambitious things – see Rage Against The Machine, Incubus, Tool, and Deftones – while others have remained firmly stuck in the past. Pressurehead are standing at a fork in the road, facing down the choice between inventing the future or re-creating the past. They have a choice between being hailed as visionaries, or forgotten as retro footnotes. Hopefully, they will make the right decision.
