Put yourself in Dez Fafara’s shoes right now.
DevilDriver – the band you’ve been leading since 2002 – has undergone some heavy-duty lineup changes.
You’re talking a new guitarist (ex-Burn Halo axe slinger Neal Tiemann), bassist (Diego Ibarra, who previously worked with Wayne Static), and drummer (Austin D’Amond, formerly of Chimaira).
Your upcoming album, Trust No One, is also due to mark the end of the longest length of time between two DevilDriver albums to date.
It’s fair to say that this situation comes complete with a fuck-ton of pressure.
What would you do?
DevilDriver’s collective answer is the best one possible: Create an album that you can accurately describe as “…an all-out assault”. Pull zero punches, make no compromises, and just fucking go for it.
Trust No One barely pauses for breath over the course of nearly three quarters of an hour. It’s frantic and frenetic, but DevilDriver never lose sight of the all-important capital-G Groove – even as speed-picked guitar melodies swarm around bestial drums and Dez Fafara unleashes cathartic torrents of barbed words aimed at toxic former friends and acquaintances. Every member compliments the song with the level of musicianship and professionalism their respective fans have come to expect and anticipate.
Life brings with it countless social challenges – and those of you currently facing one down will find kindred spirits in DevilDriver on Trust No One. Every song on this album sparks and spits with a crystal-clear sense of reinvigoration. It’s the sound of one door closing, and another opening, bright future-light shining upon the ruins of the past.
Friday May 13th is looking lucky for metal fans.
TMMP RATING: 91%
