A year ago, Griever showed great promise as potentially shit-hot metalcore up and comers.
With their brand new Soul Searcher EP, these guys are delivering on that promise – and then some.
If names like Trivium, Killswitch Engage, and Malefice make you uncomfortably tumescent, you’re going to fucking love Soul Searcher. This EP comprises six tracks of top-notch riffage, slamming beatdowns, ultra-tight grooves, lung-vacating screams, and plenty of tasteful melodies shining light into the darkness and illuminating intensely personal lyrics. Punctuate the whole thing with glitchy electronics (Malevolent); piano interludes and insane guitar solos (Virulence); and cool chorus hooks (A Pure Heart), and it’s clear that Griever have stepped up and delivered some next-level material.
When the most constructively critical points in my notes are “…the snare is mixed a little too high in this bit,” and “…it’s not 1000% original, but fuck it – it’s still sick,” I consider that a pretty good sign. Griever will need to mutate their style in a more idiosyncratic way in order to level up again, but that’s only a matter of time.
If your summer dress code is mainly made up of black jeans and black t-shirts with black boots, trainers, and accessories, keep May 27 marked as a day of future joy and excitement – and maybe make an advance appointment at your local hospital for May 28, so you can be as prepared as possible for the headbang-related neck strain this EP will undoubtedly induce.
