The Sun Explodes [Interview]

The Sun Explodes

TMMP caught up with The Sun Explodes a week ahead of the release of new EP The Calm, The Storm (reviewed on TMMP here) to talk origin stories, advice, and the band’s plans for the remainder of 2015…

Your new EP is out next week. How’re you feeling right now?

Great. So far no one’s had a bad thing to say about it which is always nice – and as is usually the case, these songs have been written for ages and we just want them out there at this point!

How did The Sun Explodes come to be?

Six years ago it was a combination of two Carlisle bands who broke up, and since then we’ve had two members leave [and] two new ones join. We started out aiming to meld electronic stuff with rock [and] metal, but pretty much evolved past that by the time our second album came around.

How does a song of yours go from idea to reality?

Like most bands these days I think, in the bedroom studios of a guitarist (me) and a singer. Almost all of the music is written “in the studio” (bedroom), and then tweaked in the practice room.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Probably “There’s no problem that can’t be fixed with duct tape; if it hasn’t worked, you just haven’t used enough duct tape.”

Beyond your EP release, what does 2015 hold for you?

We’re currently hard at work on album three, which is going to be a concept album and we’ve made the jump to seven-string guitars. We hope to be back in the studio on that by the end of the year. As well as that, we have various gigs and festivals to be announced soon.

What’s on your bucket list?

We’d love to get out of the UK and play some shows overseas at some point, and we’d love to wangle our way onto a proper tour. Most other things on that list we’ve managed to cross off by now. I mean, we’d love to sell a million CDs, or even just enough to break even on what TSE costs us, but things like that are less important and much less likely!
