Mr Tom: ‘King & Queen EP’ [Review]

Opinion

I think I need to move to Southampton. Those of you who have been following the Musical Melting Pot social media feeds have most likely noted my love of math-pop quartet Signals; now, having discovered ‘indie banger pop’ band Mr Tom, my loyalty to Guildford is becoming somewhat tested.

This EP is straight up cool, a gorgeous set of sun-soaked songs from a band already gaining recognition from a number of movers and shakers within the British music business. The title track features fantastic guitar/vocal interplay; Hook, Line & Sinker is a clear festival winner, all sexy guitar pop with head-bobbing drum grooves and impressive rhythmic intricacies that never undermine the song’s fundamental structure; C’est La Vie is a truly slick city-bred indie tune practically built to make fields of party lovers grind and sway festival nights away; and Dead of Night moves from an intro that sounds like a night on Miami Beach in the ’80s into a hook that drags the listener back to UK summer festival fields once again.

This EP is a simple, effective, and masterfully crafted statement of intent. Mr Tom make no secret of the fact that their mission is to get you off your feet and screaming their songs at the top of your lungs; and with songs like these, they’re very unlikely to encounter any resistance.
