EaglePrawn: ‘EP’ [Review]

Opinion

I fucking love this! Guildfordian trio EaglePrawn are fiercely original – both a dream and a nightmare for a music reviewer, providing a unique satisfaction that lies, frustratingly, beyond the grasp of mere words. However, I’m happy to abandon the need to analyse and describe in microscopic detail when the world needs more music like this.

Alienation

Alt-funk, confident vocals, Mike Patton-esque lyrics, nice ride work from the drummer. Funky tuba. Yes, you read that last sentence correctly. My brain is still trying to comprehend it, too.

Nipple Pinchy

D’n’b lyrical rhythms set to tribal drums and plodding tuba riffs. Seriously – a tuba; and what’s more, it sounds like it belongs here. My mind is truly blown. Congratulations, EaglePrawn. You have officially won at music.

Sink Or Swim

A work of left-of-centre freak-soul beauty. Jazz-pop gone horribly right. Spaces in all the right places. Makes me want to see Eagle Prawn write a James Bond theme song. Pure, unadulterated excellence.

Sleep Police

Radiohead meet a ’70s cop show groove. Underwater. Just because. The sound of three scarily talented musicians having fun and producing a seriously tasteful tune.

Overall: A sumptuous left-of-centre triumph. Nothing more need be said. This EP is almost literally too incredible for words.
