Kenner – ‘How To Make Hummus In Six Steps’ [Review]

On paper, this should be terrible. A music video that tells you how to make hummus? What?

In lesser hands, this concept would fall flat on its face. Mixing music and cookery is something I’ve only seen pulled off effectively once before – by beatboxing legend Beardyman, seven years ago – and although comedy would seem to be the magic ingredient, it’s still a risky proposition. Eitan Kenner was walking a very thin tightrope when he pushed ahead and made this video; one wrong move, and public humiliation would have been his only reward.

In the event, however, this happened. A sublime blend of professionally polished, creatively innovative excellence. As entertaining as Gordon Ramsey’s guide on how to treat a lady or Nigella Lawson’s dirty talkHow to Make Hummus in Six Steps ups the bar with a top-class and excitingly eclectic electronic soundtrack that – crucially – works exceptionally well without the video. Delightfully off-kilter rhythms, pretzel-like melodies and a couple of Skrillex-esque glitches add up to a tasty cake topped off with fun and vibrant video icing.

How to Make Hummus in Six Steps has made my day. There’s a sentence that only comes along once in a lifetime.
