Romani Beau: ‘Into the Night’ [Review]
Fiction
Beneath the blanket, the grass was soft and inviting. As they lay together, the city spread out beneath them, a silence enveloped the world. No rumble of distant traffic, no sirens, no dogs howling at the rising moon. Summer was fading, and with it many long months of excited planning and fantasising. The time they had been waiting for was finally here, and they could scarcely believe it.
The air was crisp and lukewarm, each inbreath filling their lungs with freshness and vitality. But deep in their bones, there remained a deep, anxious ache. Despite their most thoroughly thought-out strategies, there was no absolute certainty beyond this point. Anything could happen. The potential outcome – disaster, victory, defeat, delight – seemed still to be determined, decided at some unknown future point by a roll of Fate’s dice. As comforting as crystal balls or horoscopes might have been, they were all too aware that time was the only device capable of illuminating what lay before them.
Simultaneously, they shifted uncomfortably. Both nervous systems sensed it. Their eyes met. They breathed in unison. Their arms tightened around each other.
It would prove to be their best defence.
Opinion
After the relentless heaviness of Cenesthesie, this blissful country-folk tune is the perfect tonic to bring one out of the depths. Slow, elegant, and richly textured, with strings, piano, and guitar blending behind soulful and intimate vocals, it is full of melancholic longing – and a great little song to listen to as summer begins to blend into autumn. A skilful piece of classic songcraft.
