IDestroy – ‘Vanity Loves Me EP’ [Review]
If you think girls can’t rock, you’re nothing more than a master of rectal ventriloquism.
For proof, see IDestroy’s new EP. With one eye on the era of classic punk, and the other on the modern world where “rough around the edges” is an increasing rarity, Vanity Loves Me is a collection of four great songs that highlight this Bristolian trio as a unit to watch. Beyond the title track with the video viewable below, IDestroy (the song) and Talking Shit both sizzle and spark with party-punk energy and attitude.
State Of The Art, though, is easily the best track on this EP, blurring the lines between punk and rock while nailing it with hard-hitting lyrics and deep grooves.
Overall, Vanity Loves Me is a wicked EP. But on the constructively critical side, it would be cool to hear IDestroy fighting some kind of socially positive good fight at a deeper level than they currently are. Vanity Loves Me sounds like it’s targeting perfectionistic body image issues, IDestroy kicks off by hinting at an anti-materialistic angle, and State Of The Art briefly thumbs its nose at gender stereotypes – but IDestroy obviously have what it takes to take the powerful wankers of the world down a peg or two, and this EP alone won’t be enough to make that happen.
To quote a line from IDestroy: “I’m angry and I like to be…”. Fucking great. Aim that anger at a deserving cultural/societal institution, let ‘er rip, and never hold back.
