The Algorithm [Interview]
Some artists have more than one calling. Maybe it’s graphic design, audio production, or accountancy. For Rémi Gallego, purveyor of progressive electronic insanity as the Algorithm, it’s definitely comedy.
You’re set to hit ArcTanGent 2015 this week. What’s going through your mind right now?
I really badly want to listen to Ricky Martin right now and I really hope he will secretly perform at ArcTanGent. Please tell me he will.
What can the curious expect from your set?
I can tell you what they can’t expect: microwaves. There will be no microwaves involved at all, I promise.
What happened at the first show you ever played?
It was in 2011, I ate a kebab sandwich a few minutes before playing, and I had a huge grease mark on my polo. I’m so thankful this didn’t ruin my career. Well, it kinda did, I’m still crying everyday. This event is the main inspiration behind all my songs as this is such an emotional story.
What’s the most batshit crazy thing that’s ever happened at one of your shows?
The kebab thing was pretty crazy? No? Ok – here’s a better one:
I rick rolled everyone at Download Festival 2013. A few days later, Rick Astley himself wrote to thank me. Now that’s crazy!
And here’s another one: I once fought against Jackie Chan on stage and I won, then I stole his jetpack and kept playing while flying around and throwing money at people.
True story man.
If money and good taste weren’t issues, what would your stage setup look like?
I would definitely have a few hundred lawnmowers on there.
Beyond ATG, what’ve you got planned for the future?
Nothing, I plan to stop doing anything just after ATG. Jokes apart, a new album, a lot of tours, and hopefully ATG again!
Hey, who knows? I don’t know, I’m not God. Do you know? Maybe you’re God. Okay, see you later.
