Goan Dogs [Interview]

Goan Dogs

With 2000 Trees Festival on the horizon, TMMP talked to desert rockers Goan Dogs – starting with a very serious question…

First off, I need you to help me settle a debate: What the hell is “desert rock”, anyway?

Music for people to rock out to in any desert. So, no idea really. Once upon a time, The Desert Sessions and Tinariwen used to seep into our music though, and we just kept using the phrase. It’s tiring thinking of new descriptions when the music keeps evolving.

You’re due to play 2000 Trees 2015. Do you have anything special planned for your set?

In a word, yes. Over the last year we have been writing and scrutinising our new material with legendary producer Bruno Ellingham. But before we hit Rockfield studios, we can’t wait to share our new sounds with 2000 Trees.

What’s your favourite part of the festival experience?

Having a rave. In the fresh air.

What’s the most mental thing that’s ever taken place during one of your live sets?

Sam asked our audience at the Colston Hall to sneeze. That was pretty mental.

How did Goan Dogs come to be?

The band originally started with lead singer Luke and drummer Dan. An early sound was created, but a two-piece was never the idea. Soon good friends Theo, Bill, and Sam joined to carry and develop the full sound.

What inspires you?

We are all inspired by different things but more often than not, others’ music inspires ours.

Beyond 2000 Trees, what’ve you got planned for the remainder of 2015?

After 2000 Trees we’ve got a few more performances to showcase our new material, including Farmfest and something a little special in our hometown of Bristol. But then it’s all about the studio and making our first full length album.

What’s your biggest aspiration as a band?

To be free to develop and create our music in an industry that supports artists. That, and headlining Glastonbury with bigger fireworks than Sir Paul McCartney.
