The Decoy [Interview]

The Decoy

Sometimes a new discovery blows your mind in the best way possible. Welsh prog mentalists the Decoy certainly did that with their new EP Parasites, due out on May 25 via Ghoulish Records and sure to get you wondering what the fuck just happened when it finally beats on your eardrums. For this interview, there was only one way to begin…

Your new EP Parasites is a real mindfuck – so I have to open with a horribly clichéd question: Who are your influences? Where do those ideas come from?!

Joel (Williams, bass/vocals): Difficult question! We all have very different musical tastes spanning all genres, which I think contributes to our sound enormously.

Lewis (Barber, guitar/vocals): I’m a big fan of Reuben, Biffy Clyro, QOTSA and Every Time I Die. I’m loving the rap at the moment.

Luke (Blake, drums/percussion): I’m into bands like August Burns Red and BMTH.

Joel: I listen to bands like Incubus, RHCP, Dream Theater etc.

What are your earliest musical memories?

Lewis: I don’t actually remember it, but my mam has an old home movie of me, aged two, headbanging to AC/DC then falling asleep stood up.

Luke: My mam bought me some leather trousers when I was younger, not really music related but I rocked those things so hard!

Joel: I had an inflatable guitar one year for Christmas? Thats all I got…

What’s the Decoy’s origin story?

Joel: We were a cover band for a few years during our early teens, but playing other people’s material got boring and we felt like we needed to branch out and create music of our own.

Describe each of the tracks on Parasites in a single sentence each.

Lewis: Moustache Cash Dash is a short, upbeat track about the joys of unemployment.

Vultures is a sarcastic track about jealous boyfriends.

Parasites is angry.

ANDYOUISM is a fusion of pop, rock, and reggae which we have aptly named ‘proggae’.

If you could support any band in the world, who would you go for and why?

Lewis: Reuben, Coheed and Cambria, they would be beast! Alexisonfire would rock.

Kanye West would be a good laugh. Beyoncé would probably be huge! Queens of the Stone Age would be way up the list too!

Outside of music, what inspires you?

Lewis: Influences and ideas can come from anywhere at the most unexpected moments: listening to bands, walking, skating, working, politics and life in general!

What’re your plans for the remainder of 2015?

Joel: More music.

Luke: More touring.

Lewis: More fun!

What’s your greatest ambition?

Lewis: To make a decent living writing and performing music.
