Missiles of October: ‘Hangover EP’ [Review]
Opinion
Although the goal of The Musical Melting Pot is to support and encourage the musicians of the world, sometimes tough love is required.
This EP simply isn’t good enough. It’s a set of extremely shoddy live recordings, poorly mixed, by a band who sound like they’re having an off night. A decade and a half ago, back in the early days of the digital revolution, this kind of release would be considered the norm – especially given the comparatively primitive recording tech of the day. But today there are thousands upon thousands of bands pushing out pristine, beautiful recordings the first time around – and even when that lofty standard isn’t met you can usually at least be assured of a certain measure of quality in terms of production.
Today it’s not just a point of pride for bands to ensure that their fans hear them at their best – it’s just expected. And if you put out an EP like this, it comes across as naive at best, and disrespectful at worst.
Having said all that, it’s clear that Missiles of October do have potential. The players themselves are all very good, and their songwriting is alright. I detected the influence of Rage Against The Machine in there somewhere, which is always good to hear. However, as the majority of the other bands featured on The Musical Melting Pot demonstrate, even the grassroots level is saturated with genius these days. Missiles of October still have a lot of time to put in before they’re ready to compete on a professional level – and as a starting point they must ensure that their tracks are at least listenable.
