Benjamin Longman – ‘The Ghost Months Vol. 1’ [Review]
Opening with a grand, anxiety-ridden statement and segueing into warm swathes of fingerpicked acoustic guitar and sorrowful slide work, the first minute of Ghost Months opener Grass is a brilliant demonstration of Benjamin Longman’s compositional capabilities. As the thickest instrumental layers fall away, Longman’s prime-cut vocal enters to prove him no slouch in the songwriting department either.
Gradually it all builds, resolves, and three stick clicks herald the arrival of the confidently stomping Letters. Here again, Benjamin Longman seems comfortably at home, this time in a space closer to folk rock. By this point, any points the man himself may have set out to prove can definitely be considered proven – but there’s still more to come. From the quirky banjo on More to the distorted and raw production of Ghosts; the guitars tied up in frustrated knots on Side; and Undone‘s frantically worrisome vibes, the remainder of Ghost Months is no less immersive and cinematic than the first two tracks.
Overall, The Ghost Months Vol. 1 is a truly great folky EP.
