A Sudden Burst Of Colour – ‘Waves Will Rise On Silent Water’ [Review]

a sudden burst of colourInstrumental post-rock can be tough to listen to at times. Even when the vibes are cool, it can quickly become repetitive and dull rather than sublimely hypnotic. This release is definitely the latter though.

Waves Will Rise On Silent Water is an easy album to “get” and chill out to – and A Sudden Burst Of Colour know their stuff when it comes to composition, anticipation, and pacing. Each track on this EP breathes, rises, swells and falls away with non-clinical precision, making it feel more like an experience or journey than an exercise in beard-scratching pretentiousness. Riptide opens with gentle echoes and atmospherics before hitting a strident, strutting groove; Yume jangles, insistently and gently pounding until a truly epic section washes away all that came before it; Life Spent Drifting‘s confident rock drumming and funky riffing made it my personal highlight; and Ocean Floor crackles and fizzes with masterfully contained energy.

If you’re planning a long drive, a day at the beach, or a lazy evening spent in the company of a music player and some headphones, Waves Will Rise On Silent Water should be part of your playlist.
