ASTPAI – ‘Burden Calls’ [Review]

burdencalls_cover_webFrom the opening building blocks of Single Use to the gritty, harsh tones of Emotion In The WayBurden Calls is a brilliant mix of the familiar and original. Yes, it’s punk – but there are plenty of imaginative touches that set ASTPAI apart from the rest. Whether it be a dose of mathy complexity, a moment of melancholy vibes, or a surge of cliff-jumping explosiveness, ASTPAI aren’t afraid to push the boat out beyond the traditional, often militantly enforced boundaries that separate classic punk from contemporary rock.

With punk albums, I often struggle to make it through to the end without skipping a track – but Burden Calls is so exceptional that I found myself drawn in for the duration. If Hell Is For Heroes had thrown themselves into the deep end of punk, this is probably what they’d come up with. Very nicely done.

Thanks to Lee Jackson at Saviour PR for the heads-up about this release.
