Steven Gizzi – ‘The Terrestrial Orchestra’ [Review]

steven gizziToday has not been a good day. Less than an hour in, and the minutes have all been uniformly packed with stress. My mind’s agitated, and my nerves are shot.

At least, they were. All I can say is, thank God for artists like Steven Gizzi.

The Terrestrial Orchestra is lush, warm, inviting, and beautiful – the perfect antidote to stress and difficulty. Cloudburst could easily soundtrack the closing moments of a Michael Bay movie; Cascade is a lovingly layered musical cake with a serene and relaxed rhythmic base and plenty of soft harmonic icing; and Cavern starts out with dense synth pads before a shimmering tower of leads rise out of the ether to be gawped and marvelled at. Combustion would fit perfectly alongside Ramin Djawadi’s work in Game of Thrones, and Cognition begins minimalistically and soon turns bombastic, striding across an imaginary soundstage with grace, poise, and swagger. Proceedings close with hard-edged robotic rhythms dropping out to reveal tranquil nature samples and the fading sound of burning embers.

Overall, The Terrestrial Orchestra is awesome, and clearly the work of an experienced and talented media-music professional. More than just a CV-boosting showcase, though, it’s extremely easy and pleasurable to listen to.

If you’re looking to hire a producer/composer for a media project, look no further than Steven Gizzi.
