Postures: ‘Postures’ [Review]
Swedish people get all the good stuff first. Absolut Vodka. Battlefield 3. ABBA. Feeling jealous yet? Thought so. Well, unless you’re Swedish yourself. Anyway…
Opening with layers of eerie, foreboding guitars overlaid by soaring, ethereal vocals and smashing into a hard-grooving jazz-rock spazzfest a la The Mars Volta (but with a female equivalent of Cedric Bixler-Zavala making her presence felt with deep-seated confidence) before twisting and turning through sparse soundscapes, emotional solos, attention-scattering special effects and enough fusion influences to resurrect Joe Zawinul and get him nodding his head and saying ‘yeahhh….niiiice’ (just like this guy), Postures is a solid ten song set crammed with professional, progressive jazz rock that satisfies my constant craving for out-of-the-ordinary tunes.
Whether keeping tight riffs under control or letting loose during experimental mid-track jams, Postures consistently demonstrate that they’ve put the time in, paid their dues, and are ready to let the contents of their expansive imaginations loose. This is a very good thing, and your ears are sure to agree. And remember – this is just their debut. I can’t wait to hear what comes after this!
