London Grammar – ‘Hey Now EP’ [Review]

london grammar hey now epOk. Wow. Attempting to describe just how incredible Hey Now is presents this writer with an uncomfortable reality. Words can only go so far. ‘Beautiful’, ‘lush’, ‘epic’ – all fit and work perfectly, but are still somehow inadequate.

This EP’s title track is simply beyond words – but there are a few with which one can address the remixes offered up here for half the price of a crappy sandwich from Boots. Arty gets busy with clubland vibes and plenty of upbeat energy; Tensnake keeps plenty of space for lush synths and some downright funky bass; and Bonobo gives us some serious digitally enhanced electro-jazz brilliance. Closing off the whole set is a fragile, naked, and vulnerable studio version of Metal & Dust – and what choice do you have by the end but to open your eyes and double check that your music player’s Repeat function is engaged? Well, none at all really.

Words may not be enough, but there’s one sentence that I feel fits. London Grammar’s Hey Now EP is beautiful enough to make an atheist spell God with a capital G.

There you go. That’s all we have. £1.79, for God’s sake. I feel like I’m stealing music-making money from London Grammar’s pockets for that price.
