Doomed From Day One / Dye The Flux / Stone Giants / Change Persona / Origami Hearts [Live Review – Surrey Uni, 31/10/13]

Change Persona

Unfortunately I missed the evening’s openers, Origami Heart – but Change Persona kicked off my evening with a fun and entertaining set of well-practiced punk tunes. Throw in a Sum 41 cover, an enthusiastic crowd, and a frontman in a dress, and you have all the signs of an act with great punk-centric potential. Nice job!

Stone Giants

I was really impressed with the instrumental dexterity on display here. Decent stage presence too. As the frontman pointed out mid-set, it’s early days for these guys, and a consistent work ethic will see them graduate to a new level very soon.

Dye The Flux

Any set that starts with the bassist and vocalist in the crowd is likely to get an audience’s attention – and Dye The Flux succeeded here. I don’t know how many energy drinks these guys got through before going onstage, but it was more than enough to ensure a riveted crowd. Plenty of cool riffs and songs as well; but more than anything else this was simply a great live performance. Kudos to you, Dye The Flux.

Doomed From Day One

It’s been a while since I last saw DFDO live – but in that time they’ve hit an all-time high in terms of…well…everything. Technical precision: check. Pro-level stage presence: check. Brutally intricate prog-death metal tracks: check. Confident and powerful frontman: check again.

Basically, Doomed From Day One tick all the boxes, and were rewarded with passionate and relentless waves of appreciation from the biggest crowd of the night. Flawless as they currently are, when DFDO hit the next level up it’s going to be insane. Keep an eye out for these guys – if you’re a metalhead you’re going to be hearing a lot more about them in the future.

Finally, it’s worth giving plenty of credit to No Wave and the sound team for a professional, well-run gig.
